Nanda & Company has commenced a class proceeding against The Estate of Father Gordon William Dominey, The Synod of the Diocese of Edmonton (“Anglican Diocese of Edmonton”), and Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Alberta (“Alberta”) alleging that Father Gordon William Dominey engaged in pattern of sexual predation and abuse at the Edmonton Youth Development Centre (“EYDC”) from 1985 to 1989, when Father Dominey worked as the juvenile correctional facility’s prison chaplain.

On September 8, 2023, the Alberta Court of Appeal certified the class action against the Estate of Father Gordon William Dominey, the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton, and Alberta.

The claim alleges that Father Dominey was an employee of both the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton and Alberta while work as the EYDC’s prison chaplain. The Anglican Diocese of Edmonton and Alberta provided limited oversight over Father Dominey’s work, and he had full authority and control over the youth inmates at the facility at various times. It was during these moments that Father Dominey sexually abused upwards of 15 known victims, but it is likely that more exist.

Criminal charges were laid against Father Dominey in 2016, and this action was commenced in 2017. There are approximately 15 alleged victims in both court proceedings.

Father Dominey died in November 2019, resulting in a stay of the criminal prosecution. However, this civil class proceeding continues.
